What are panty liners?
Panty liners, known as a type of feminine hygiene product, have become familiar to women. Thanks to the adhesive backing, panty liners can be easily attached to women's underwear. They are small and thin, making them comfortable to use without feeling like a foreign object, thus becoming a favorite among some women.
Panty liners are often called mini sanitary pads, but they are not the same as sanitary pads. In terms of shape, panty liners do not have wings on the sides like sanitary pads do and are much smaller.
In terms of function, panty liners do not contain super-absorbent polymers inside; their absorbency relies solely on the non-woven fabric material itself. Therefore, the absorbency of panty liners is much less than that of sanitary pads, only capable of absorbing a very small amount of vaginal discharge.
Due to their thinness but low absorbency, panty liners are often used to prevent unexpected menstrual leaks at the beginning of a period or to absorb the brownish blood left in the vagina due to oxidation over a long time at the end of a period.
Some people also use a panty liner horizontally at the back of their underwear when using a sanitary pad to prevent leaks. Some even like to wear a panty liner daily to prevent the leakage of normal vaginal discharge.
However, the use of panty liners can have negative effects on women's physiological health!
Why is the use of panty liners not recommended?
Although panty liners are very small, their bottom layer is made of plastic film, which has poor breathability and lacks super-absorbent materials to keep the surface dry. After absorbing liquid, the surface of the panty liner becomes moist, causing discomfort due to friction with the private parts. More seriously, keeping the vaginal area in a warm and moist environment for a long time can lead to bacterial growth and even inflammation.
While many people use panty liners with the thought of "just in case," using panty liners is essentially adds an extra layer of thick material to women's underwear, increasing the burden and risk.
When choosing products to absorb menstrual blood or other vaginal secretions, sanitary pads and other feminine hygiene products should be preferred.
Furthermore, if there is a continuous secretion of fluids from the lower body, it is important to seek medical advice promptly to rule out the possibility of vaginal infections and other gynaecological diseases.
So why do some manufacturers continue to produce panty liners despite their negative impact on women's physiological health?
The main reason is that the materials needed to produce these small panty liners are not only simple but also minimal, resulting in a low production cost, even just one-tenth of that of sanitary pads.
Moreover, by packaging panty liners together with sanitary pads, marketers make consumers feel like they are getting more sanitary pads for a more affordable price, thereby increasing sales. This results in more profit for the manufacturers.
Now, many gynaecologists are committed to educating women about the potential harms of using panty liners. To avoid risks, the hope is to encourage fewer people to use panty liners and instead seek safer feminine hygiene products.
