Many women report postpartum issues such as:
"Why hasn't my menstruation resumed after several months?"
"My menstrual flow is very light and ends in just one day."
"My first menstruation after childbirth was like a heavy postpartum hemorrhage, which was terrifying!"
In fact, the time for menstruation to return after childbirth varies significantly among individuals, influenced by factors such as the woman's age, the level of ovarian function recovery, and the duration of breastfeeding. It can range from a month to a year.
Typically, for women who breastfeed, menstruation returns between 6-8 months postpartum, and it's normal for it to continue up to a year. Women who do not breastfeed should consider a formal gynecological examination if menstruation hasn't resumed within five months after delivery.
Postpartum menstruation, including the amount and duration of menstrual flow, may differ from pre-pregnancy. A menstrual flow above 5ml and a period longer than three days are considered normal ranges; there's no need for concern.
If menstruation is not within the normal range, indicating either too little or too much flow or a duration that's too short or long, further examinations are advised. However, if no structural or endocrine abnormalities are found, there's usually no need for worry.
Additionally, women who are breastfeeding post-delivery may experience changes in menstrual cycle and volume due to short-term hormonal imbalances, which are expected to return to normal cycles after some time.
If menstrual irregularities persist for several months, it may be reasonable to suspect the possibility of a disease and seek medical attention promptly.
In a formal hospital setting, examinations such as ultrasounds, sex hormones, and ovarian reserve tests can be conducted to effectively rule out conditions like uterine adhesions, premature ovarian failure, or luteal phase dysfunction, with treatment tailored accordingly.
